David brings rare, firsthand depth to Backyard Gladiator Training, forged through decades of dedicated study and teaching in the Filipino martial arts.
He trained personally with Grandmaster Remy Presas, the legendary founder of Modern Arnis—the revolutionary system that modernized traditional Filipino Escrima, Kali, and Arnis into a safe, flowing, adaptable fighting method. Presas emphasized "the flow," weapon-to-empty-hand transitions, and real-world utility, and David absorbed these core principles directly from the Professor himself.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, David served as the living "blackboard" for Michael Replogle and Jeffrey Arnold, two of Presas' original personal students and co-founders of American Arnis. As they innovated a new integrated approach—building on Modern Arnis foundations while incorporating elements of traditional karate, kung fu, judo, taekwondo, and other arts popular in the U.S. at the time—David tested, refined, and helped pass on their evolving techniques.
At the American Arnis Academy, where he became the de facto head instructor, David led classes, demonstrated innovations, and ensured the material was practical and teachable. A key transformation under Replogle and Arnold was a more scientific approach: emphasizing timing as the central factor in every technique's success—distance management, rhythm disruption, and precise entries/exits that make actions work against resistance.
This evolution drew from historic sources—European fencing manuals, medieval weapon reconstruction, and of course Modern Arnis itself (a comprehensive summary of Filipino systems)—to create a non-stylistic, principle-based method free from rigid forms or cultural dogma.
Today, David distills this lineage into Backyard Gladiator Training: one cohesive system that honors Presas' vision of adaptability while delivering timeless, effective skills for modern life.

Most martial arts schools make money by filling the room. Gladiator-school.org keeps training intentionally small so you get corrections, pressure, and accountability—not just cardio in a uniform.
You are never lost in a crowd. Every session includes individual feedback, technical correction, and rounds tailored to your current level.
Train on grass and earth beneath oak branches. The setting is quiet, private, and focused—no mirrors, speakers, or walk-in traffic.
No long contracts, no testing fees, no obligation to compete. The goal is functional skill, stronger mindset, and better conditioning.
Sessions combine conditioning, striking, clinch work, footwork, and weapon-inspired drills. Everything is scaled so beginners and experienced athletes can train together safely.
Adults and teens who want serious training without the commercial gym atmosphere. You do not need prior experience, but you do need to be willing to sweat, focus, and show respect.
Not a good fit if you want loud music, big crowds, or to just hit the bag without being coached.

I run Gladiator School as a craft, not a product. I keep groups small so that every student receives personal attention and help when you need it. In fact, I train alongside you, and I only accept students who are ready to take training seriously—regardless of current fitness level.
“I would rather train six committed people under these trees than sixty people staring at a mirror.”

Wear athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, and bring water. If you have your own gloves or hand wraps, you can bring them, but they are not required for your intro. We train barefoot or in minimalist shoes on grass.
We start with a warmup, mobility check, and simple coordination drills so I can see how you move. Then we introduce basic striking mechanics, partner or pad work (as appropriate), and some conditioning. At the end, we talk honestly about fit, goals, and what ongoing training would look like for you.
Yes. Intensity is scaled to your level. Contact is introduced gradually and always with consent and clear rules. The goal is to challenge you without breaking you—especially in the first few months.
Your first session is full price, but if you decide to continue training within 7 days, up to 50% of that amount is credited toward your first month or training block. Ongoing rates remain discounted for active students.
Training is in a private backyard under oak trees in a quiet residential neighborhood. For privacy and safety, the exact address is shared after we confirm your intro booking through the form.
